Notes from class!!!!!!
Lesson 1
1.
Weathering- produces rock and
mineral fragments (sediments)
Two types of weathering
A.
chemical-when minerals are dissolved or
changed into something
else.
B.
Physical- minerals remain chemically
unchanged, rock fragments break
Off of the solid rock along fractures or grain boundaries
2.
Erosion- the removal and
transportation of sediment
- Four main agents of : Wind, moving water,
gravity, and glaciers
-
Transports rocks to new places
3.
Deposition- when transported sediments are
deposited on the ground or sink
To the bottom of a body
of water.
The
energy of fast moving agent can affect the deposition.
A.
Fast moving water transports the larger
particles when it starts to slow down
The largest fall out first, then the next largest, and so forth so that
the
Different size particles are sorted and layered.
B.
Wind can only move small grains, that is why
sand dunes are made of fine
Grains of sand.
C.
Glaciers move ALL materials
with ease. Landslides work just like glaciers
D.
Gravity- Force that pulls
everything toward center of earth
4.
Lithification- physical and chemical
processes that transforms sediments into
Sedimentary
rock
Lithify means stone (Greek)
1.
Lithification begins with compaction which
is the weight of overlying
Sediments that forces the sediment grains closer together causing
physical changes.
Layers of mud contain up to 60% water that can be squeezed out.
2.
Cementation occurs when minerals glue
sediment grains together into solid rock.
CaCo3 calcite and fe2o3 iron oxide examples
5.
Sedimentary Features
1.
Bedding – horizontal layering of
rock; this occurs from the way rock
settles out of
Water and wind.
A.
Graded Bedding –bedding in the particle
sizes have become finer toward the top layers
B.
Cross-bedding- happens when inclined layers of sediments
are deposited across a horizontal layer
C.
Ripple Marks- formed by back and forth
movement of waves
D.
Angular versus rounded Grains- Rounded
sediments are usually moved farther away from their original place. As they are
knocked into each other their edges are worn down. More bbbb
z nangular pieces are probably made of harder minerals or less movement.
E.
Evidence of the Past Life – best known
features of, sedimentary rock are fossils.
During Lithification dead organisms fall into ponds, lake, ditches and
are covered with sediments and become part of the sedimentary rock when
minerals seek in and take the place of their flesh.
Types of
Sedimentary Rock
A.Clastic sedimentary Rocks – Most common type, formed from
abundant deposits of loose
Sediments on
Earth’s surface
1.
Coarse grained rocks- consist of gravel sized rock and
mineral fragments.
Conglomerates have
round gravel sized particles- due to gravel transported by high energy flow
In the end they go through Lithification.
Breccia – composed of
angular gravel sized particles-probably did not travel far from source.
No abrasion to make it smooth.
2. Medium- Grained rocks- streams, river channels, beaches, and
deserts contain abundant sand size settlements and mineral fragments. They
often exhibit ripple and cross-bedding which shows direction of channel and
current.
Another important thing-
is that there is usually a large amount of porosity in sandstone.
Large amounts of water
can move through it making it a valuable reservoir, oil can also be stored
there. (Porosity-amount of
space between grains)
3.
Fined Grain Rocks- sedimentary rocks consisting of silt
and clay size particles. Swamps ponds deep oceans, little to no movement. Low
porosity and forms barriers. The grains of this rock is often very tight.
B.
Biochemical Sedimentary Rocks – Formed from the remains of once
living organisms
1.
Most abundant is Limestone composed primarily of Calcite.
2.
Some organisms make the shells from calcium carbonate when they die and
sink to the bottom they form a thick layer of carbonate settlement.
3.
Some limestone does not contain fossils and has crystalline texture
and consist of tiny spheres called
ooids.
4.
All of the above can lithify to form sedimentary rock.
C.
Chemical Sedimentary Rock
1. When concentrations of dissolved
minerals in a body of water reaches
Saturations, crystals can precipitate
out of the solution and settle to the bottom. They are called evaporites as a
result chemical sedimentary rock forms. Primarily form in arid regions,
drainage basins, continents that have low water flow.
Section 3 Metamorphic Rocks
A.
Recognizing Metamorphic rock
1. Metamorphic means to change. During
metamorphism the rock remains solid yet it changes
2. The high temperatures for
metamorphism come from the internal heat of the earth.
B.
Metamorphic minerals
1. During metamorphism the minerals in a
rock change into new minerals that
are stable under new
temperature and pressure.
2. Minerals that change this way are
said to undergo solid-state alterations
C. Metamorphic Textures-
Metamorphic rocks are
classified into two texture groups Foliated and Non-Foliated. Geologist use
texture and mineral composition to identify them.
1. Foliated Rocks
Have layers and bands-
High pressure during formation cause minerals with flat needle-like crystals to
form with their axes perpendicular to the pressure, this created the layers or
bands.
2. Non-Foliated Rocks
Metamorphic rock that are
composed mainly of minerals that form with
blocky crystal shapes.
Two Examples: Quartzite,
Marble
a. Quartzite-hard
, often light-colored formed from metamorphism of quartz- sandstone
b. Marble- formed
from metamorphism of limestone or dolomite. Some marbles have smooth textures
that are formed from interlocking grains of calcite.
c. Porphyroblast-
under certain conditions, new metamorphic minerals grow large while surrounding
minerals remain small, ranging from a few mm to a few centimeters. Ex. Garnet
D. Grades of Metamorphism
1. Low-Grade metamorphism- forms with
low temperature and pressures
2. High-Grade metamorphism- forms with
high temperatue and pressure different suite of minerals and textures
3. Intermediate- Grade – in between low
and high. Associated with its own suit of minerals and textures
E. Types of Metamorphism
1. Regional Metamorphism- Temperature and Pressure that
affects a large region on Earth’s crust . This area can range from low to high
grades.
2. Contact metamorphism- when molten material, such as that
in an igneous intrusion, comes in contact with solid rock. Because temperature
decrease with distance from the intrusion , metamorphic effects also decrease.
3. Hydrothermal metamorphism when very hot water reacts with rock
and alters it’s chemical and mineral compositions. Chemical changes are common
near igneous intrusions and active volcanos. Valuable ore deposits are formed
in this manner.
